The great thing, you can share these notes or notebooks with other teachers and administrators. Share worksheets, handouts and notes with your students as well, Help them become organized with this tool.
Evernote is free, but has a 60 mb data limit per month, which shouldn't be a problem unless your wearing out the keys on you computer all the time. Why the data limit, well, Evernote automatically syncs and backs up your work to the internet, all you need to do is keep track of your username and password and your notebook is accessible from any internet enable device on the market.
Benefits of Tool or App
Evernote is web-based but also has downloadable versions for Mac and PC as well as mobile devices, so it is a useful solution for a variety of technological situations.
Evernote automatically saves work and syncs it to the internet on the user's account. Eliminating the need to "find lost files" or "its on the other computer", everything is right where you left, just as you left it. If the users move computers or workstations, all they have to do is log into their accounts.
Evernote users can publish their work to the internet and make it accessible either as a document or as a collective notebook. Evernote will provide you a link, all you have to do is share it via what ever media you wish.
Evernote allows users to download published work. For instance, if a teacher wants to make a guided notes sheet for students to work on, the teacher can publish it and the students can download it directly to their notebook. Then use colors to differentiate between questions and answers.
Evernote allows you to attach other documents to your notes, such as powerpoints and/or word documents.
Evernote has some add on features such as Skitch, for drawing simple pictures and diagrams and Web Clipper to help you browse the web and bookmark smarter.
Constraints of Tool or App
Evernote has a limited ability to edit text and inserted pictures, so some care must be given correct for this. If asking students to insert pictures from the web or other places, they must make sure they are smaller. Text is limited but creative use of colors. In chemistry content , only the web version allows you to do superscripts and subscripts.
Different features available in different formats. Evernote has a desktop, iPad and a web version; they all have different text editing and highlighting capabilities.
Evernote can have formatting issues, especially with content copied and pasted from another source such as the web or Microsoft Word. To conquer this, the teacher will have to re-type or re-create documents, which typically gets rid of all formatting issues, which can take some time.
Evernote can have a tendency especially on mobile devices to crash- no worries though, it starts right back up. But it is a good thing it automatically saves your work as it goes.
Once you publish a document using Evernote on the web and make the link available to students, make sure it is finished. Otherwise you might have to republish the document once your updates are complete.
Evernote only allows 60mb of storage a month. This is never a problem unless you are incorporating lots of visuals and or audio recordings in your notes.
How To Use Tool or App
To get started using Evernote, please visit Evernote.com and click "GET EVERNOTE, ITS FREE", this will take you to a page to download it for your device
Or to log on and use it on the web just click "CREATE ACCOUNT" in the upper right hand corner
If you download it, Evernote will ask you to "CREATE AN ACCOUNT" when you first enter. (write down your username and password in a save place)
To start using Evernote, there are two features to be aware of, Notes and Notebooks. Just like in school, notes go into notebooks. To start a new notebook click File> New Notebook and give it a name. To start a new note use the icon in the center of the screen that says "New Note"
For teachers, create a notebook for each class you will be using Evernote with, then create a Note for each topic as necessary. I've found tables are a really useful way of organizing information.
Now for the really useful part- publishing and sharing. To share a Note with your students click Note> Share>Copy URL to Clipboard. Use this link to provide your students access to the note. If you are using a learning management system, include this in their course as a link.
When the student click on the link, it will take them to an online version of the document. In the upper right hand corner it will give them the option to "DOWNLOAD TO EVERNOTE", once they sign into their Evernote account, the note will be there. (if its not, click the circular "Sync" button in Evernote.)
Now your ready to save trees by making less copies. This is a great too for teachers who are apprehensive about using a lot of technology, its a great way to start "doing old things in new ways"
If students are using shared workstations, make sure they log out of their accounts when they are finished.
